Better World

Mission-led
sustainability

Our health, and the health of our planet is inextricably linked.

Delivering healthcare has a big environmental impact, and we need to reduce it. That’s why we’re working with our partners to educate, advocate, and effect change – at pace.

Bupa’s sustainability strategy consists of three missions to  hold ourselves accountable to change for the better.

Mission Zero

Our ambition is to get to net zero by 2040

That means we stop emitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through the work that we do but also through our partners and suppliers.

There is a lot to do, but we are making good progress including:

Direct emissions focus

Since 2021, we have reduced our direct emissions by 23.5%.

Green energy

100% renewable electricity across all our directly-controlled UK sites

Energy reduction

We use technology to support remote temperature management of care homes, offices and IT server rooms. We have invested in new Air Handling Units at the Cromwell Hospital.

Scopes 1-2 de-carbonisation

Some of our offices, clinics and dental centres are already net zero. Our largest office in Manchester is powered by solar panels. The new wing of our Cromwell Hospital will be a net zero building, retrofitted with green technology to provide the best care for our people and for the planet.

We are starting to decarbonise some of our care homes, electrifying the kitchens and getting rid of gas equipment that burns fossil fuels. We are transforming one of our homes into Bupa’s first net zero care home as a feasibility test to roll out across our estate.

Scope 3 de-carbonisation

Like most corporates, most of our emissions are in our value chain
(for example, claims for treatment, patient travel, emissions from purchased goods and services, business travel, investments etc.)

For the past two years we have focused on the largest part of our scope 3 footprint - claims and supply chain (37% of value chain):

  • Engaged with the largest healthcare providers to align with our net zero targets and build this into our contracts
  • Engaged with our largest suppliers to align with our targets, including suppliers who have the highest emissions in our supply chain
  • Engaged with IT suppliers who are working faster than other sectors to decarbonise

Mission Accelerate

By 2040 we will have used research, collaboration, and innovation to accelerate sustainable healthcare solutions.

As a large organisation, we have a duty and a responsibility to collaborate with the wider healthcare sector and take action.

We’re focusing on:

Better for you, better for the planet

We build sustainability into all our products and are working on growing virtual care.

Innovating

Through our employee eco-Disruptive programme, we work with start-ups who are building healthier solutions for the people and for the planet including anaesthetic gas capture in our hospital theatres with Sagetech and recycled scrubs with Upcycled Medical.

Leadership

Our five-year partnership with the University of Manchester is all about how we can innovate and work together to transform healthcare for a greener tomorrow, whilst still providing the best care for our patients.

Single-use reduction

We’ve led an audit of our single-use items and are making swaps where we can, whilst also maintaining infection control and patient safety. For example, we’ve swapped 9k plastic trays and 1900 laryngoscope handles for reusable ones.

Mission Regenerate

By 2040 we will play a leading role to improve people’s health through the restoration and regeneration of nature.

We are focused on how we as an organisation can go from doing no harm, to doing more good, for our people, our customers and the communities where we all live and work, particularly for those who are most vulnerable to ill health and climate change.

We do this by:

The Bupa Foundation

The Foundation’s work is focused on practical projects that improve people and planet health, especially the most vulnerable people in areas of deprivation. Find out more about the Bupa Foundation and its impact here: www.bupafoundation.org.

Healthy Cities

Our Healthy Cities challenge encourages people to step up for the planet. In 2024, we walked over 1.3billion steps and donated £1million to improve green spaces across the UK and overseas.
