Our
journey

Bupa was created on 3 April 1947 with its purpose ‘to prevent, relieve and cure sickness and ill-health of every kind’, combining a caring ethos with freedom of choice.

Before we became Bupa as you know it today, we offered the UK's first major company health insurance scheme. Our logo - a shield - symbolised protection and defence against illness. By 1955, over 200,000 members were relying on Bupa to keep them in good health.

1950s

By 1967 we'd invested in our first computer. This was no small feat - the computer occupied two floors and eventually took over the entire head office building in Essex Street, London.

1960s

With the 1970s came a huge advance in healthcare. We opened the UK's first health screening centre in 1974, assessing 7,500 people that year. 1974 also saw the launch of our first TV ad. In 1979, the Bupa Medical Foundation was created.

1970s

In 1982, we launched Bupa International and became Europe's largest health screening provider. We also opened Bupa Health in the (then new)  Milton Keynes: a care home with 36 rooms and round-the-clock support.

1980s

The 1990s saw us go truly global. We covered 170 countries and settled claims in 84 currencies. We also acquired Barbican Healthcare, which saw us branch into dental care for the first time.

1990s

Always ahead of the time, we launched Bupa Wellness in 1999, which focused on a progressive and holistic approach to health. By the mid-2000s, 40 Bupa Wellness Clinics had been opened.

2000s

Major international healthcare company. Across 170 countries, we serve 16.7 million health insurance customers, 15 million patients in our clinics, centres and hospitals, and look after 22,3000 residents in our care homes.

2010s

Today we're a leading international healthcare company, serving 50 million customers in countries around the world. We offer a wide range of services, including health insurance, hospitals, outpatient clinics, dental centers, and aged care facilities.  In June 2025 we opened our state-of-the-art Clinical Training Academy in Staines.

2020s

Looking to the future.

 

We're dedicated to continuing our legacy of innovation and excellence. We're investing in digital health technologies, sustainable practices, and new healthcare solutions to ensure we meet the evolving needs of our customers and contribute to a healthier planet.

Our future is focused on creating a more connected and personalised healthcare experience. Our Connected Care strategy aims to integrate physical and digital healthcare services, making it easier for customers to access the care they need. This includes expanding our network of healthcare centers, dental clinics, and optical stores, and enhancing our digital health platforms like Blua.

In 2025 we opened our new Clinical Training Academy in Staines.  It's a place to learn and grow capabilities; to shape and redefine healthcare.  It's a place to bring us together and most importantly it's a place for you.

Chris became CEO of Bupa Global, India & UK on 1 January 2026. he is accountable for Bupa UK's portfolio of businesses, Bupa Global, which provides international private medical insurance to customers around the world, and Niva Bupa in India. He became Managing Director of Bupa Health Insurance Australia in March 2022, and in January 2025 he moved to the UK to become CEO of Bupa Insurance UK.

Rebecca was previously Operations Director for Bupa UK Care Services, a role which she held for seven years, followed by 18 years as General Manager for our network of over 130 care homes and villages. She now holds the role of Chief Sustainability and People Officer for BGIUK.

Richard is the CEO of Bupa UK Insurance and is an experienced leader in financial services: he joined Bupa in 2018 as Product and Proposition Director for Bupa UK Insurance, becoming General Manager for Bupa UK Insurance’s Consumer division from 2021 to 2024 and more recently, Medical and Healthcare Director.
