Pioneering Preventive Care

Genomics is a transformative field that holds immense promise for the future of healthcare. By analysing an individual's genetic makeup, we can identify predispositions to certain diseases and conditions, allowing for early intervention and personalised treatment plans. By catching potential health issues before they become serious, we can reduce the incidence of chronic diseases, improve overall well-being, and enhance quality of life. This proactive approach to healthcare, known as preventive care, is crucial in helping people live longer, healthier and happier lives.

Bupa's Genomic Health Pilot, also known as "My Genomic Health," is a groundbreaking two-year initiative. It offers whole genome sequencing to over 3,500 customers in the UK. This program aims to identify genetic risks for more than 36 conditions, including 10 types of cancer such as breast, prostate, skin, and bowel cancer.

Behind our genomics trial is a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, researchers, and support staff, all passionate about making a difference. Jed is one of these remarkable individuals, playing a pivotal role in the genomics health pilot. He shares his insights on the project, highlighting Bupa's relentless drive to become the world’s most customer- centric healthcare company.

Bupa's approach to preventative care stands out due to our adoption of advanced technology. Jed highlighted, "Bupa's strategy is unique because of our use of cutting-edge technology. We're the first major UK-based healthcare provider to offer whole genome sequencing, focusing on actionable health outcomes. This empowers customers to make significant health and lifestyle changes." Jed believes personalised healthcare can profoundly impact community health by providing targeted, efficient services, increasing the frequency of certain screenings, and enhancing health outcomes.

Jed highlighted that during the implementation of the Genomics Health Pilot, the team leveraged existing processes from other areas of the business, such as health assessments and primary care, and adapted them to the genomics space. Additionally, new processes and systems were designed to deliver the service effectively, with improvements in technical systems providing great opportunities for growth and development. The main focus throughout the implementation was to ensure safety, security, and the highest standards of quality and compliance.

Since the trial's inception, there have been significant and measurable impacts. Jed shared, "It's been fascinating to hear from customers who have found that their Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) reports align with their current health experiences. For example, some customers have discovered genetic variations that indicate a higher risk of certain musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries, which correspond with their personal history of such injuries.

To effectively integrate insights from genomics research into routine patient care, many participants benefit from the available follow-up GP appointments. These sessions allow them to discuss their results and undergo additional tests based on WGS indicators or risks.

For Jed, one of the most rewarding aspects of leading this initiative has been the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of people, both within the UK and in Spain with Sanitas (Spain's leading private medical insurance provider and part of the Bupa Group). Jed also mentioned that working in a new field, putting a plan into action, and seeing it succeed with customers has been very rewarding.

Looking ahead, Jed expressed his and his team's enthusiasm for the future of healthcare and Bupa’s role in it. "The entire team is excited about the future of healthcare and being at the forefront of innovation. We've adopted an agile mindset and are eager to see how the WGS programme propels personalised medicine forward," he said.
