Harriet
Lifting Limits

My name is Harriet, and I am a GP at Bupa. I am visually impaired, with a prosthetic right eye and other challenges in my left. I also live with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and psoriasis. Despite these conditions, I have built a fulfilling career in medicine and feel incredibly fortunate to work in a supportive environment where I can help others improve their health. I especially enjoy engaging with patients about lifestyle medicine and supporting them in making healthier choices. I am also a paracheer athlete, competing in world championships, which has been a significant part of my journey.

Bupa has been instrumental in supporting me with my disabilities. Before starting, I had an occupational health appointment to ensure any workplace adjustments were addressed. This resulted in practical accommodations like a larger screen at work to assist with my visual impairment and guidance on maintaining my nail and hand health to manage my psoriasis effectively.

The ongoing support has been exceptional. Whenever I’ve needed time off to compete in Adaptive Cheer or appointments for my own health, my centre manager has been understanding and accommodating. I’ve also felt that Bupa fosters a culture of inclusivity within my team—everyone is approachable and open to discussions about how best to support each other.

Overall, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Bupa has demonstrated a genuine commitment to inclusivity by ensuring I have the resources and adjustments necessary to thrive in my role. From workplace modifications to understanding the importance of my extra-curricular commitments, I have felt supported every step of the way. This culture of inclusivity not only benefits employees like me but I also believe this reflects Bupa’s broader mission of care and compassion.
